Plastic is becoming a problem - more now than ever before. Not only does it not biodegrade like organic material - its production depletes finite petroleum resources and pumps toxic chemicals into the air and water.

75% of all plastic bottles end up either at the landfill tip, taking up to 1,000 years to biodegrade, or in the middle of the ocean where it causes havoc with marine life.

Plastic bottles are made from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource. Along with plastic bags, plastic bottles are one of the most prevalent sources of pollution found on our beaches.

Americans alone buy an estimated 25 billion single-serving, plastic water bottles per year. Eight out of ten (22billion) will end up in a landfill, leaking toxic additives, such as phthalates, into the groundwater. A million barrels of oil are used annually to produce those plastic bottles - enough to fuel 100,000 cars for a year.

You can't burn it either - incinerating used plastic produces toxic byproducts such as Dioxin into the air.

It's not only bad for the environment - it can be bad for our health too...Additives added to plastic bottles to make them pliable may also be wreaking havoc with our hormones, especially estrogen. The bottles may leach a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA). Bisphenol A is extremely widespread among many household plastics such as baby bottles and food storage containers. BPA is a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and epoxy resins and is a known carcinogen that has been linked to brain synapse, reproductive and developmental impairments. Canada announced in 2008 it’s intent to ban the sale of baby bottles containing BPA’s.
